What is the big deal about Genetic Testing?

Have you heard that Genetic Testing is all the rage?

Is it really all it is cracked up to be or is it just hype? Well, yes. Will it turn you into a bionic human or solve all of your health woes with a few supplements? Well, no. However, our genes have unique codes and variations in these codes can have a pretty big impact on our health.

According to Pure Genomics, variations in these codes or Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) alter the way our bodies work and process nutrients and breakdown amino acids. Variations in these SNPs are linked to cardiovascular disease, mental health, metabolism, cancer and more.

We cannot control the genes we get from our parents or the resulting genetic alterations, but we are learning that we can help balance those alterations through a diet which supports the genetic miscoding. We can also use targeted supplements when diet is not quite enough.

One of the most common SNPs is with MTHFR genes (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase). This gene breaks down the amino acids homocysteine and folate. Alterations in the MTHFR genes have huge implications across all health systems most notably neurologic, cardiovascular and mental health. Could your depression or sadness be related to this MTHFR SNP? Very possibly!

So, what do we do about it?

  • First, we test! We can take the information you get through tests such as 23 & Me or we can order a higher level test such as the one offered through Genesight.

  • Next, we take a look at the results. The information lets us know if we need to recommend a supplement to support your MTHFR process.

  • Could it really be that easy? For some, yes. Why not take a look?

Simple, but oh so effective!
